The Clarity has 212 horsepower, which is the result of a combination of its electric motor’s 181 horsepower and the gas engine’s 1.5-liter displacement. Power is sent to the front wheels by an automatic continuously variable gearbox (CVT)… In hybrid mode, the Clarity can reach 100 km/h in around nine seconds; however, in EV mode, it takes more over thirteen seconds—a considerable time penalty. However, the real show-stopper is the Clarity’s strong 232 lb-ft electric torque, which gives it decent acceleration out of the box in any mode. While it may not be a speedster, the Clarity is also not an environmentally sluggish vehicle. The noise level of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) may change as you switch between driving modes. Once the Clarity is in EV mode, it becomes very silent inside. You may detect a slight rumbling from the engine when you drive about town in hybrid mode on a partly charged battery. You could hear it more loudly, though, when you speed rapidly, climb steep highway slopes, or the battery dies entirely.

The Clarity has not been subjected to crash testing or headlamp performance evaluations by the IIHS or the NHTSA because of its low manufacturing volume.
