Exterior and Interior

The Clarity is typical of eco-friendly automobiles in that it prioritizes aerodynamic efficiency over superficial pretense. It may be a sedan, but it seems more like an eco-friendly vehicle thanks to its lengthy overhangs, partial rear fender skirts, and smooth fastback design. To make it appear more family-friendly, the Clarity borrows design cues from the Accord and Civic sedans; yet, its appearance is disjointed. Dan Ilika of AutoTrader.ca described the Clarity as having “awkward proportions and design elements that are trying too hard to be futuristic,” and he placed it among the top five most ugly cars available at the moment. Even if it’s evident that it requires some adjustment, I don’t think it merits such harsh judgment.

On the inside, the cabin of the Clarity is an entirely different story, and it’s a fantastic place to relax. To amplify the look of the Touring trim’s real leather upholstery, dark faux wood trim and imitation suede adorn the dashboard and center console, giving the impression of more costly materials than they actually are. Cohesive, subtle, and refined—that is the aesthetic.

A bevy of driver-assistance technologies are standard on the Honda Clarity, even at the base level of trim. These include heated front seats, adaptive cruise control, automatic LED headlights, automatic windshield wipers, dual-zone automatic climate control, an eight-speaker audio system controlled by an eight-inch touchscreen, and more.

Among the many amenities included in the $4,000 Touring package are a satellite navigation system, a high-definition radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and perforated leather seating rather than cloth. You won’t find a sunroof, heated back seats, heated wheel, ventilated front seats, or power adjustable seats on the features list. This is one item that is lacking. Even the base edition of the Prius Prime Upgrade comes with a heated steering wheel. Other than the faux-leather upholstery and the absence of other features, it is basically identical to the higher-end variants. So, in this specific category, the Clarity comes out on top.

Engine and Performance

The Clarity’s electric powertrain produces 181 hp, while the 1.5-liter gasoline engine produces 212 hp. An automated continuously variable transmission (CVT) controls the engine and drives the front wheels of the vehicle. In electric mode, the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes around thirteen seconds, whereas in hybrid mode, it takes around nine seconds. The Clarity states as such.

The most impressive feature of the Clarity for city driving is its incredible 232 pound-feet of instant electric torque. The Clarity is responsive off the line thanks to its torque, whatever of the mode you put it in. While in electric drive mode, the Clarity appears to have far more power than the smaller PHEV, the Toyota Prius Prime, which has a slightly lesser electric driving range. Although the Clarity isn’t precisely a rocket ship, it is very environmentally friendly. Whenever the Clarity is running on electricity, the cabin remains remarkably silent. The hybrid mode adds a barely audible background engine murmur when driving about town on a partially charged battery. Official fuel economy estimates for the Honda Clarity reveal a 2.1 liters per hundred kilometers (or “liters equivalent”) when powered solely by electricity, and 5.3, 5.9, and 5.6 liters per hundred kilometers (or “l/100 km”) when powered by hybrid powertrains. It is claimed that a 17 kWh lithium-ion battery may be operated as an electric vehicle for 76 kilometers, but that range can be increased to 547 kilometers when the gas engine is turned on. It should take approximately 2.5 hours to charge the battery using a Level 2 charger, which uses 240 volts, and roughly 12 hours to charge using a Level 1 charger, which uses 120 volts.

I checked the Clarity’s gas mileage for the 500 kilometers before my pickup and found that it had consumed an average of 4.4 liters per hundred kilometers, with the battery fully charged. After two days of visiting the neighborhood and performing errands, I managed to get 75 kilometers of driving out of the battery, which is still 25% of the promised life. Since I am now interested in the charging schedule, I plugged in at the free Level 2 charging station while I shopped for groceries once a month. The battery was fully charged after 45 minutes, which indicates that the actual charging period is closer to three hours.

With a range of 76 kilometers, the Clarity significantly outperforms the Prius Prime’s 40 kilometers. This is especially obvious when you consider that my actual mileage was lower than the Clarity’s claimed range but higher than the Toyota’s. If I hadn’t gone to the hassle of manually switching to hybrid mode, I would have used zero gas throughout the pandemic because the Clarity can be driven for extended periods without gas. The Clarity Touring is equipped with an array of active safety features. Some examples of these features are adaptive cruise control, Honda’s LaneWatch blind-spot display, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, and forward collision warning. The Clarity Touring comes equipped with all of these safety measures as standard, which adds to Honda’s excellent reputation for safety. The second function was really helpful for seeing bicycles in city bike lanes as I turned right. But the manufacturer has gone on record as saying they’re planning to replace the present camera-based system with blind-spot monitoring sensors.

The Low Assembly Volume of the Clarity has prevented it from being crash-tested or evaluated for headlight performance by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Honda Clarity is significantly more expensive than the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV ($32,649-$38,249) and the Toyota Prius Prime ($33,550-$38,700)—$44,505 for the base model and $48,505 for my tester’s Touring grade ($1,700 more after taxes and freight). The Honda Clarity is less expensive and has a more luxurious ride and a significantly greater electric range than its two primary competitors. Furthermore, both the Quebec and British Columbia governments are providing incentives.
