Even while EVs are seeing a surge in popularity for city driving, this remains the case. Exterior and Interior

Environmentally friendly vehicles, like the Clarity, typically value aerodynamic efficiency more than aesthetic pretension. While it is a sedan, its sleek fastback style, long overhangs, and partial rear fender skirts give it the impression of being a green machine. The Clarity takes design elements from the Accord and Civic sedans to make it seem more family-friendly, but it doesn’t have a cohesive look. Citing the Clarity’s “awkward proportions and design elements that are trying too hard to be futuristic,” AutoTrader.ca’s Dan Ilika ranked it as one of the five most unsightly cars on the market right now. Inside, the Clarity’s cabin is a whole different ballgame, and it’s a great spot to spend time. To complement the Touring trim’s genuine leather upholstery, the dashboard and center console include dark faux wood trim and imitation suede, creating the illusion of more expensive materials than what they actually are. The aesthetic is refined, understated, and cohesive.

The Touring package adds $4,000 and includes features like high-definition radio, satellite navigation, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, perforated leather upholstery (instead of cloth), and more. The list of amenities does not include a sunroof, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, ventilated front seating, or power seat adjustment. One thing that is missing is this. A heated steering wheel is included on all Prius Prime Upgrade levels, even the entry-level model, which is otherwise identical to the higher-end models save for the use of faux-leather upholstery and the lack of any other equipment. Consequently, the Clarity emerges victorious in this particular category.

Engine and Performance

A combined total of 212 horsepower is produced by the Clarity’s 1.5-liter gasoline engine and 181 horsepower by the electric motor. The vehicle’s front wheels get their power from an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT). Transitioning from 0 to 100 km/h in hybrid mode takes about nine seconds, while in electric mode it takes about thirteen seconds. The remarkable 232 pound-feet of immediate electric torque is the major story when it comes to driving about town in the Clarity. No matter what mode you put the Clarity in, its torque makes it relatively responsive off the line. Compared to the Toyota Prius Prime, a smaller PHEV with a somewhat lower electric driving range, the Clarity seems far more powerful when in EV mode. While the Clarity isn’t exactly lightning fast, it’s also rather eco-friendly. The Clarity’s cabin is remarkably silent when operating in electric mode. When driving about town on a partially charged battery, the hybrid mode adds a background engine murmur that is barely audible. On the other hand, this muttering can get rather loud when the battery dies, the car is speeding up, or you’re driving up a steep highway incline.

The Honda Clarity has official fuel efficiency numbers that show it uses 2.1 liters equivalent per hundred kilometers while running on electricity, or “liters equivalent,” and 5.3, 5.9, and 5.6 liters per hundred kilometers when running on hybrid powertrains. A 17 kWh lithium-ion battery is stated to have a range of 76 kilometers when used as an electric car, however that range extends to 547 kilometers when the gas engine is turned on. Level 2 chargers, which use 240 volts, are expected to charge the battery in around 2.5 hours, while Level 1 chargers, which use 120 volts, would take about 12 hours.

I was able to see that the Clarity had used an average of 4.4 liters of gas per hundred kilometers for the 500 kilometers prior to my pickup, and the battery was fully charged. Two days of running errands and exploring the area left me with 75 kilometers of driving, and I still had 25% of the battery life that was advertised. Now that I’m curious about the charging timings, I decided to plug in at the complimentary Level 2 charging station while I was doing my monthly grocery shopping. After 45 minutes of charging, the battery was back up to 50%, which means the real charging time is closer to three hours.

Compared to the Prius Prime’s 40 kilometers, the Clarity’s 76 kilometers is a huge improvement in electric vehicle range. Considering that I comfortably outran the Clarity’s stated range yet fell short of the Toyota’s makes this point even more glaring. The Clarity can be driven for long periods of time without using gas, and as I would have driven far less during a pandemic, I would not have used any gas at all if I hadn’t gone to the trouble of manually switching to hybrid mode. Regardless, I didn’t put a lot of petrol in the Clarity so I could make valid observations about its fuel efficiency in real-world scenarios, which speaks much about its performance as an electric vehicle.  New 2026 Honda Clarity Electric Price

A plethora of active safety systems are standard on the Clarity Touring. These include adaptive cruise control, a blind-spot display from Honda called LaneWatch, lane-departure warning with lane-keep assist, automated emergency braking, and a forward collision warning system. All of these features are standard on the Clarity Touring, which contributes to Honda’s stellar reputation for safety. Particularly useful for seeing bikes in urban bike lanes when I was making a right turn was the latter feature. The Clarity has not been tested for crash ratings or headlamp performance by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of the United States due to its low assembly volume. This puts it in good company, though, since neither of those groups has ever tested a car from Land Rover, Jaguar, or Porsche.

Compared to the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV ($32,649-$38,249) and the Toyota Prius Prime ($33,550-$38,700), the Honda Clarity is priced much higher at $44,505 for the base model and $48,505 for my Touring trim tester (not including the $1,700 freight charge and taxes). In addition to offering a more opulent ride and a far longer electric range than its two main rivals, the Honda Clarity is also more affordable. Additionally, incentives are being offered by the governments of Quebec and British Columbia.
